Habit tracker with streaks
Tick off each day, watch the streak climb and the year fill in. Free, private (it lives in your browser) and fast on a phone.
Make habits stick: what the research says
Tie each habit to a cue. Habits form when the same action is repeated in the same context. Writing "After I pour my coffee, I will read 10 pages" is an implementation intention; a meta-analysis by Gollwitzer and Sheeran (2006) across 94 studies found these if-then plans have a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals. That's why each habit here has an optional "After I…" field. See habit stacking for more.
Expect it to take weeks, not 21 days. In Lally et al. (2010), the median time to reach near-automatic behaviour was 66 days, with a range of 18 to 254. Try the curve yourself on how long it takes to form a habit.
Make it small. A habit you can do on a bad day survives. Walk 10 minutes, not 10 km.
Prefer paper?
Make a printable habit tracker for any month with your own habits filled in, ready for the fridge or a bullet journal.
Where do habits come from?
Good habits are the daily half of a goal. If you haven't yet, write the goal with the SMART goals worksheet and ask "what would I do every day if I were already on track?"
Questions people ask
Is this habit tracker free, and do I need an app?
It is free and runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install and no account. On a phone, use your browser's "Add to Home Screen" option to open it like an app.
How are streaks counted?
Your current streak is the number of days in a row you marked the habit done, ending today. If you have not ticked today yet, the streak still counts through yesterday, so it does not drop to zero at breakfast. "Best" is your longest run ever.
What if I miss a day?
Keep going. In the study by Lally and colleagues (2010), missing a single day did not measurably slow down how automatic a habit became. A useful rule is "never miss twice".
Where is my data kept?
In this browser's localStorage only. Use "Download backup" to save a file you can restore on another device, and the privacy page to clear everything.
How many habits should I track?
Start with one to three. Each new habit needs attention and a clear cue until it becomes automatic; adding more once the first feels easy works better than starting ten at once.
What does the heatmap show?
Each square is one day of the past year. The darker the pink, the more of your habits you completed that day. Pick a single habit from the menu to see just its history.
